That is the guiding understanding for the foundational spiritual practice of hospitality. All through December and Advent we prepare for guests and the birth of a child. We usually think of the stranger as someone other than ourselves, someone we do not know. But we say of strained relationships between family members that they are estranged. We begin the season of welcome with hospitality: “meeting the other where they are with what we have to offer.”
