AIDS Resource
Persons with AIDS and their families may turn for counsel and advice to:

Drivers for Interfaith Assistance Ministry
Twenty volunteers drive clients to and from the local poverty agency to pick up clothes and groceries, to pharmacies for prescription medicines, to housing, which may be in woods, under bridges, in open fields, to the detox center and veterans’ hospital near Asheville, and to other sites as needed. Coordinator: Connie Harris

Tutor Program at UUFH
This outreach program is a cooperative effort of UUFH, the Blue Ridge Literacy Council, and Head Start/WCCA. English as a second language instruction is offered to Head Start moms in the Fellowhip Hall two mornings a week. This unique approach to ESL instruction is a three-way partnership: WCCA provides transportation in an agency van. BRLC trains the tutors and advises on curriculum, and UUFH allows use of the facility and funds the child care for the little ones (too young for Head Start) who accompany their moms to class.

End of Life Choices
Organization providing advice, documents, and support for death with dignity, meets monthly at our Fellowship. Coordinator: Don Emon

Faith Link
One of UUFH's community outreach programs, Faith-Link provides support for women with children who are trying to break out of poverty and gain control of their lives. The UUFH Faith-Link Committee operates under the aegis of IAM and currently supports two families, working to build the mothers' self-esteem so that they can meet the challenges of single parenthood with confidence and courage. PFLAG
Monthly—first Mondays, 7:30 p.m. Fellowship Hall
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) promotes the health and well- being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, as well as their families and friends. Assistance is offered for coping with an adverse society; education is imparted about ways to to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy is provided to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. United Religions Initiative of Henderson County (URI)
Monthly—usually first Sundays, time varies. For a complete schedule, contact the coordinator at 890-2631 or Email. URI is part of a global, grassroots organization whose purpose is to promote enduring interfaith cooperation, to end religious violence and to create cultures of peace, justice and healing for the earth. Programs are offered to the community in support of the purpose statement above with primary attention given to cultivating peace: inwardly, locally and globally. Coordinator: Mary Page Sims

We are a set of UUFH volunteers who provide an evening meal once a month for the people who staff the Volunteer Medical Resource Center in Hendersonville. The staff of this evening clinic all come from their day positions to serve the uninsured and under-insured in Henderson County and the meal we provide is greatly appreciated. The UUFH people on this committee are asked to help about once every three months.
